A prediction market closes early when the outcome it tracks happens before the listed closing date, and trading stops at that point. Once a market closes early, no new contracts can be bought or sold.
The date shown on a market is often the latest it can run, so a position can stop being tradable days or weeks sooner than that date suggests. Anyone holding a position when an early close occurs retains that position through to settlement.
Why does a prediction market close early?
A prediction market closes early when the underlying condition specified in its contract rules is fulfilled prior to the scheduled expiration date. Kalshi's rulebook states that if the outcome "occurs prior to the Expiration Date of a Contract, Kalshi may adjust the Expiration Date and the timing of Expiration to be earlier, which will be announced on its website" (Rule 7.2(c)).1KalshiEX LLC, "Rulebook, Version 1.29" (Rules 6.3 and 7.2), kalshi-public-docs.s3.amazonaws.com, 2026
If Kalshi advances the expiration date, it also advances the trading deadline, so that trading ends no later than expiration (Rule 7.2(d)).2KalshiEX LLC, "Rulebook, Version 1.29" (Rules 6.3 and 7.2), kalshi-public-docs.s3.amazonaws.com, 2026 The rule lets the exchange end trading once the outcome has taken place.
On Polymarket, the end date listed in a market's rules is "when the market is eligible for resolution".3Polymarket Documentation, "Resolution," docs.polymarket.com, accessed October 2026 Rules often allow resolution sooner depending on the underlying trigger: a market on a Federal Reserve decision "may resolve as soon as" the Fed's statement is issued, and a market on Bitcoin reaching a price level "will immediately resolve to 'Yes'" once the price is reached.4Polymarket, "Will the Fed decrease interest rates by 25 bps after the October 2026 meeting?" market rules, Polymarket public API, accessed October 20265Polymarket, "Will Bitcoin reach $150,000 in October?" market rules, Polymarket public API, accessed October 2026
How do you know if a market will close early?
A market's closing behavior is defined directly within its contract specifications prior to trading.
Kalshi's help center states that each market contains a "Timeline and Payout" section outlining two distinct closing models: "Closure when the outcome occurs" and "Closure at a listed date and time".6Kalshi Help Center, "Timeline and Payout," help.kalshi.com, March 2026 Kalshi notes that this full description is located in the grey text under the "Pays out" line, emphasizing that readers should check timeline details before entering a position.7Kalshi Help Center, "Timeline and Payout," help.kalshi.com, March 2026

- A Kalshi daily temperature market closes at 11:59 PM local time "regardless of any data releases or events occurring".9Kalshi, "Will the maximum temperature be >75° on Oct 5, 2026?" market data (series KXHIGHNY), Kalshi public API, accessed October 2026
On Polymarket, these parameters are listed directly within the market's rules, which "specify the resolution source, the market end date" and how edge cases resolve.10Polymarket Help Center, "How are markets clarified?," help.polymarket.com, June 2026

What happens to a position and open orders when a market closes early?
When a market closes early, existing positions are locked until settlement, and trading in that market stops.
- Trading stops: On Polymarket, once a market resolves, contract trading ceases and token purchases or sales are blocked.11Polymarket Documentation, "Resolution," docs.polymarket.com, accessed October 2026
- The outcome is confirmed: Kalshi determination takes between 1 and 12+ hours depending on source data releases, while Polymarket subjects proposed outcomes to a 2-hour challenge period.12Kalshi Help Center, "Market Outcomes," help.kalshi.com, March 202613Polymarket Documentation, "Resolution," docs.polymarket.com, accessed October 2026
- The position is paid: Winning contracts resolve to $1 each and losing contracts resolve to $0, exactly as they would at a scheduled close.14Polymarket Documentation, "Resolution," docs.polymarket.com, accessed October 202615KalshiEX LLC, "Rulebook, Version 1.29" (Rules 6.3 and 7.2), kalshi-public-docs.s3.amazonaws.com, 2026
The payout value of a contract does not change when a market closes early. The only difference is timing: holders lose the ability to sell before resolution, and any unexecuted limit orders resting in the order book are rendered unfillable once trading halts.
Can a market stay open after the outcome is known?
Yes, a market can remain open if its rules require official verification before closing, even after an event appears to have occurred in real time.
Kalshi notes that "A market remaining open is not an indication that payout criteria have not been met," as the platform must often wait for official source agencies to publish finalized data before determining a market.16Kalshi Help Center, "Market FAQs," help.kalshi.com, April 2026 Kalshi allows trading to continue during this waiting period and explicitly states that "Markets are not re-settled because an event appears to have concluded while trading was still available."17Kalshi Help Center, "Market FAQs," help.kalshi.com, April 2026
Furthermore, Kalshi states that a market's displayed close time "may not equal determination time," and trading "can end before or after an event for operational reasons."18Kalshi Help Center, "Market FAQs," help.kalshi.com, April 2026
On Polymarket, an outcome proposed before the underlying event has concluded can be rejected as "Too Early," resulting in the proposer forfeiting their bond.19Polymarket Documentation, "Resolution," docs.polymarket.com, accessed October 2026
The listed date marks the latest a contract can trade, while individual market rules define the exact criteria for an early resolution.
